Computer Engineering
Overview
Computer engineering has impacted and shaped the last 50 years more than any other field, and we are still in the midst of the digital revolution and information age. Smart devices, equipped with sensors and communicating over networks, are working together using artificial intelligence and deep learning and are growing at an ever-increasing pace. There is unparalleled demand for computer engineers who understand digital hardware and software interaction and can interface computing technology to other engineering systems.
At SIUE, computer engineering students study the fundamentals, but learn practical hands-on skills in well-equipped modern laboratories for computation, simulation, prototyping and measurement.
What can I do with a degree in computer engineering?
Graduates of the fully accredited computer engineering program work in applications areas that include:
- Design and manufacturing of computer chips
- Embedded electronic and computing systems, “smart” devices, and the Internet of Things
- Artificial intelligence and data science
- Satellite, radar and weather monitoring and forecasting systems
- Automatic control systems for robotics, aircraft, medical devices, and manufacturing plants
- Audio-, video- and data-communication systems, and satellite communications
- Digital processing of audio, video and speech data using computers
- Lasers and optical instrumentation and sensing
- Healthcare applications including medical imaging, medical devices, and computer-aided diagnosis and treatment
