“The Matrix of Race-Fostering Social Change and Justice”
February 25, 2021, 7:00pm
Presented by Arts & Issues and the SIUE Department of Sociology
“The Matrix of Race-Fostering Social Change and Justice” will take a unique look at race and racial inequality in visible new ways regardless of our backgrounds–from minorities who have experienced the impact of race in their own lives to members of dominant groups who might believe that we now live in a color blind society. The matrix refers to a way of thinking about race that reflects the intersecting, multilayered identities of contemporary society and the powerful social institutions that shape our understanding of race. Its goals will help viewers get beyond the familiar “us vs. them” arguments that can lead to resistance and hostility, promote self-appraisal, and stimulate more productive discussions about race and racism.
Rodney D. Coates, PhD is professor of critical race and ethnic studies at Miami University and an alumnus of SIUE. He is a public sociologist engaged in critical race, social justice, social movements, social policy and practice. For Coates, being a public sociologist means that the work he does must have an impact in the wider communities–both within and external to the university.
He has conducted bias training for school districts and municipalities, police and universities. He works with local communities, corporations and Miami University to establish pathways to progress for under-represented students in fields such as STEM, business and law.
