Introduction to Effective Stormwater Management
4:30-5:30 p.m.
Instructors: Roland Biehl
The necessity for awareness and proper management of stormwater runoff in our region is expanding. Stormwater runoff from rain and snowmelt introduces pollutants like trash, chemicals, and dirt into local creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes, harming our ecosystem. This course provides an overview of how environmental regulations have evolved to address stormwater pollution to protect water quality.
With 20 years of experience, we will review the latest trends and innovations of effective structural and nonstructural best management practices. You will learn about do-it-yourself raingardens and engineered systems including bioretention and porous pavement.
Educators attending this course will be introduced to fun STEM based education on green solutions to enhance their understanding of stormwater topics which align with the Illinois State Board of Education science standards, following the Disciplinary Core Ideas Layouts of the Next Generation Science Standards.
Business owners and municipality workers attending this course will learn how to empower staff on awareness to change behaviors to reduce stormwater pollution and support our region’s stormwater municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) permit requirements.
