Four Academic Departments

Accounting

Accounting is the language of business — the discipline that turns financial information into the insight organizations depend on to make decisions, earn trust, and grow. Accountants sit at the center of every sector of the economy, from public accounting firms and Fortune 500 companies to government agencies, nonprofits, and entrepreneurial ventures. The SIUE Department of Accounting prepares students to step into that role as capable, ethical professionals ready to lead. Our department holds separate accounting accreditation from AACSB International — a distinction earned by fewer than 200 accounting programs worldwide, or less than 2% of business schools. It is a mark of quality that tells employers and graduate programs our students are among the best-prepared in the profession.

We offer a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) and a Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA), giving students a clear path from foundational study through advanced coursework that builds the knowledge and skills many graduates draw on as they pursue the CPA and other professional credentials. The MSA can be completed in as little as 12 months and is offered fully online or in a flex format that allows students to choose online or hybrid courses, with specialization tracks in Taxation and Business Analytics that let students align their studies with where the profession is heading. Whether a student is beginning their undergraduate journey or building on a degree they already hold, our programs are designed to develop technical expertise, analytical judgment, and communication skills that define a successful career.

What sets our department apart is the people who lead it. Our faculty are accomplished scholars and experienced practitioners — CPAs and researchers who bring real-world practice into the classroom and stay engaged with the profession they teach. Students gain hands-on experience through internships and professional opportunities that connect them directly with the region's employers, giving them a head start on their careers before they graduate. Our goal is simple: to help every student take the next confident step in their professional journey and enter the world of accounting ready to make an impact.

Computer Management & Information Systems (CMIS)

Technology is reshaping every organization, and the Computer Management and Information Systems (CMIS) Department at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville prepares students to lead that transformation. Through business-focused technology programs, you will learn to connect people, processes, information and digital tools to solve meaningful problems. Whether you are beginning your college journey or building on professional experience, CMIS offers practical pathways into fields where business insight and technical expertise come together.

Undergraduate Opportunties

As an undergraduate student, you can customize the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration through specializations in Computer Information Systems (CIS), Cybersecurity or Data Analytics. You will learn to design systems that improve business operations, protect critical information, and turn complex data into actionable insights. Depending on the specialization, you will gain hands-on experience with areas such as programming, Python, SQL, data visualization, artificial intelligence (AI), information security, systems analysis and design, and technology project management—all while developing a strong foundation across core business disciplines. These skills align with growing career fields: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment growth from 2024 to 2034 of 29% for information security analysts, 34% for data scientists and 9% for computer systems analysts.

Graduate Opportunties

If you are a working professional or student ready to advance, the Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MS MIS) develops the strategic, analytical and technical expertise needed to guide technology-enabled organizations. You may pursue the general MS in MIS or specialize in Cybersecurity Management, Business Analytics or Project Management, with in-person and online pathways offered across the program portfolio. Applied coursework explores areas such as information systems management, business and data analytics, risk and governance, database systems, cloud management, information security, and project management. Specialized study can also support preparation for respected industry credentials, including the CISSP and Project Management Professional examinations.

Across its undergraduate and graduate programs, CMIS emphasizes learning that extends beyond the classroom. You will learn from faculty who have significant industry experience, real-world projects, internship and professional-development opportunities, student organizations, industry-recognized certification preparation, and connections with technology professionals. You will have options for in-person, hybrid and online courses. Whether you are seeking to launch a career in information systems or accelerate advancement into IS leadership in analytics, cybersecurity or project management, CMIS will equip you to turn technology into smarter decisions, stronger organizations and lasting professional impact.

Economics & Finance

Discover how markets work, investments grow, and data drives decisions. The Department of Economics and Finance equips students with the analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in today's global economy. Through engaging coursework, faculty mentorship, internships, and research opportunities, students prepare for careers in economic analysis, finance, business, consulting, government, and beyond. Whether you're launching a career or pursuing graduate study, SIUE Economics and Finance provides the foundation to help you thrive.

Management & Marketing

Both marketing and management are important and central functions in the operation of business organizations, both for-profit and non-profit. As part of the SIUE School of Business, our programs are AACSB accredited, and our Human Resource Management concentration continues to have Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) aligned curriculum. Both disciplines, while separate in their general focus, are complementary in their content.

Marketing’s job is to ensure the products and services the organization provides are properly communicated to their customers and the public at-large. The “Four P’s” guide marketing professionals to consider the attributes of the products or services they are offering, the pricing of the products or services, how they will promote the company’s offerings to potential customers, and how the product will make its way from the manufacturer to the end user.

The field of management is very broad and covers topics such as leadership, general management, organizational behavior, company strategy, ethical decision making, human resources management, and supply chain management. Supply chain also aligns with marketing as they both address complementary aspects of how the company obtains raw materials and manufactures as well as redistributes the end-product to customers. Whether you are managing people or raw materials, the day-to-day management of the organization is complex as it guides the company to fulfill its strategic goals.

Our programs all focus on practical skill development and experiential learning through cases, simulations, and role plays. We have integrated AI into many of our courses to provide you with opportunities to learn how to ethically use this cutting-edge technology. Our faculty have a mix of practical business experience as well as academic training. Whether you are taking courses face-to-face or online and are an undergraduate or a masters-level student, our faculty are dedicated to providing a supportive learning experience and are student-focused on their approach. We welcome you and look forward to guiding your learning experience throughout your time at SIUE!
