April 8th 2024, Solar Eclipse at SIUE
On Monday, April 8, the US will experience a total solar eclipse from Texas to Maine. At SIUE we will have a partial solar eclipse with 99.07% percent obstruction of the sun at 2:01 p.m. The solar eclipse will start at 12:44 p.m. and end at 3:18 p.m. The total duration of the partial eclipse will be 2 hours and 34 minutes.
- Observing a solar eclipse is a remarkable experience when done safely.
- Never look at the sun without special eclipse eyewear.
- Standard sunglasses are not enough.
SIUE will distribute solar eclipse glasses to students, staff, and faculty. All students living in the Woodland Hall, Bluff Hall, Prairie Hall, Evergreen Hall, and Cougar Village will be able to get their eclipse glasses later this week from distribution locations at their residences. More eclipse glasses will be distributed for students, staff, and faculty on April 8 in the area around the Quad. In addition, the Physics Department will provide an opportunity to view the eclipse through solar telescopes at the Quad.
Please note that the American Astronomical Society has published an article about how to identify unsafe solar eclipse glasses.
