About Dr. Guilford
Dr. Guilford’s research expertise is in basic biomedical science with focus on investigating mechanisms underlying peripheral nervous system disorders. In addition, Dr. Guilford’s research experience includes human exercise training, weight management, and children’s physical activity interventions. Dr. Guilford has several peer reviewed publications and has presented her research over the past 10 years at numerous national and international conferences including the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Integrative Biology of Exercise, Peripheral Nerve Society, Society for Neuroscience, and Diabetic Neuropathy Study Group. She is a Certified Health Fitness Specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Guilford teaches courses in Advanced Exercise Physiology, Exercise Endocrinology, Exercise for Special Populations, and Exercise Physiology.
Research Profile:
Dr. Guilford’s research interest involves investigating how diet, obesity, dyslipidemia impact the development of neurodegenerative disease. In addition, Dr. Guilford is interested in how exercise can prevent and treat diabetic neuropathy. Her current work is focused on the effects of omega-3-fatty acids on neuropathy. This project includes assessing inflammatory factors and nerve fiber density in the skin of mice fed a high-lard or high fat fish oil fat diet. In addition, she is currently studying the prevalence of the Male Athlete Triad in SIUE NCAA athletes. The triad is characterized by having one of the following conditions: low energy availability, decreased bone mineral density, and/or reduced reproductive hormones. The prevalence of the Female Athlete Triad has been well studied in female athletes, but the similar condition in males has long been ignored, thus warranting further research.
