9/8/25 UPDATE: While Teams does function on a Chromebook, there are limitations, such as not being able to create or manage Breakout Rooms, among other things. For a full list of Teams features that are both available and unavailable on a Chromebook (as well as other platforms), please see CLICK HERE. Due to these limitiations, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND using the Teams DESKTOP APP on either Windows or Mac. The desktop app will give you the best Teams experience with access to all of Teams' features.
Microsoft Teams is a powerful tool for communication, collaboration, and productivity whether you're using it for school, work, or personal projects. If you're on a Chromebook, there are a few different ways to access and use Teams effectively.
🧰 What You’ll Need
- A Chromebook running Chrome OS
- A Microsoft account (school, work, or personal)
- Internet access
Option 1: Use the Web Version (Recommended on Chromebooks)
The easiest and most reliable way to use Microsoft Teams on a Chromebook is through your browser.✅ Steps:
- Open Chrome on your Chromebook.
- Go to https://teams.microsoft.com.
- Sign in with your SIUE E-ID.
- Teams will load in your browser and you can start chatting, joining meetings, and collaborating on files.
💡 Pro Tip:
To make Teams behave more like an app, click the three dots in Chrome’s top-right corner, then select:
Option 2: Use the Android App (If Supported)
Some Chromebooks support Android apps through the Google Play Store.✅ Steps:
- Open the Google Play Store on your Chromebook.
- Search for Microsoft Teams.
- Click Install.
- Once installed, open the app and sign in.
⚠️ Note: The Android version of Teams may have some limitations compared to the desktop or web version, especially for advanced features like screen sharing or integrations.
Option 3: Use Teams via Chrome Extensions (Not Required)
There are Chrome extensions that offer quick access to Microsoft services, but they aren't required to use Teams. It's best to stick with the web or Android app for the full experience.Troubleshooting Tips
- App not installing? Your Chromebook might not support Android apps, or the Play Store may be disabled. Check under Settings > Apps > Google Play Store.
- Audio or video issues? Make sure your browser or app has permission to use your microphone and camera.
- Performance lagging? Try closing unused tabs or restarting your Chromebook.
