Preparing for Digital Accessibility: SIUE’s Guide to the 2026 Standards
Posted November 12, 2025
Like many public post-secondary institutions, SIUE is preparing to comply with new digital accessibility requirements that go into effect on April 24, 2026. The new digital accessibility standards help ensure equal access to an institution’s web presence for all users—not just its internal faculty, staff, and students.
-
Public websites, such as for admissions, employment, special programming, and academic departments
-
Mobile applications for services such as employment, the library, or registration for courses and events
-
Learning management systems, such as Blackboard, and other learning technologies
-
Course content and assessments, such as readings, recorded lectures, slides, and handouts
-
Student and Employee service portals for employment records, course registration, and other systems
-
SIUE subscribes to Anthology Ally for content uploaded and presented within Blackboard; the red, yellow, and green speedometers next to course content have electronic guidance that is helpful for addressing common accessibility issues such as providing alt-text, headings, table properties, and color contrast between text and background colors on the screen.
-
In most cases, videos recorded or imported to YuJa, SIUE’s video streaming platform, will have captions automatically generated; content creators must review them for accuracy, but the auto-captions are normally quite accurate. Once captions have been checked for accuracy, a transcript can be exported to accompany the video.
-
ITS Instructional Design & Learning Technologies (IDLT) instructional designers are also available to provide consulting on digital accessibility to help acquaint you with remediating or, in some cases, locating alternative resources that are accessible; please note that remediation is often more time consuming than seeking content created with accessibility in mind from the start.
