Provenance
Talent Education ‑ United States of America, Inc. (TE‑USA), was a professional organization created by people involved in the Suzuki education movement in the United States. The movement founder, Shinichi Suzuki, was a Japanese string instrument teacher who gained acclaim in the early 1950s for his young (often pre‑school aged) violin students' musical abilities. The American counterpart of the movement was advanced by a string music instructor from Oberlin, Ohio, John Kendall.
Kendall became interested in Suzuki's approach and traveled to Japan in 1959 to study the method. Upon his return, eager to promote the Suzuki method, Kendall offered several lectures and workshops across the country in the early 1960s. The American String Teachers Association (ASTA) was the organization primarily responsible for the growth of Suzuki theory in the United States. With the guidance of Shinichi Suzuki members of the ASTA founded the TE‑USA in 1967. In 1973, TE‑USA formally evolved into the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA), an organization made up of members from both American continents.
Scope and Content
The major portion of the TE‑USA collection came from the Suzuki Archives held at Mankato State College, Mankato, Minnesota, which was transferred to Lovejoy Library at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in 1979. Some curriculum items were added after 1979. Material in the collection dates from 1955, with a large number of items from the 1960s and 1970s.
Administrative records and member correspondence are found at the beginning of the collection, followed by research articles and Suzuki tour promotional materials. Suzuki curriculum items, including music books, newsletters and journals, and monographs, form a large portion of the collection. There are three boxes of curriculum materials written in Japanese which include monographs, journals, and program information. In addition, the collection contains audio materials (vinyl records, reel to reel and cassette tapes) and several photographs.
