Campuswide Training Helps Faculty and Staff Best Support Record Number of International Students
As Southern Illinois University Edwardsville welcomes a record number of international students for fall 2022, faculty and staff are boosting their knowledge and experiences in best supporting these students toward degree completion.
Nearly 60 faculty and staff gathered for the first ever Global Zone International Student Ally Training on Wednesday, Oct. 12 to better understand the unique experiences and challenges that international students face and discuss how to most effectively serve the needs of the valued student population.
“The purpose of the training is to educate the campus community about factors that affect the international student experience, including immigration restrictions, cultural differences and the effects of culture shock and homesickness,” said Amy Nusser, lead immigrant specialist in SIUE’s Office of International Affairs. “By becoming international student allies, participating faculty and staff commit to learning about these factors and developing targeted support strategies, when necessary, always keeping compassion and understanding at the forefront.”
SIUE’s fall 2022 international enrollment grew 67%, or 898 total students, over fall 2021, representing an all-time high. The content of the Global Zone training was based on a survey taken by over 250 current SIUE international students, as well as a focus group and interviews conducted with current international students. Participants self-reflected on their culture and how it influences their interactions with others and the expectations they hold.
To continue SIUE’s commitment to create a welcoming environment for all SIUE students, another Global Zone International Student Ally Training will be held in late November.
