Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Upward Bound program and Christopher Cooper, program director for the SIUE East St. Louis Center’s East St. Louis Upward Bound (UB) Programs, were mentioned during the episode “How a St. Louis teacher uses Black history to make math less daunting” on “St. Louis On the Air,” hosted by Elaine Cha.
Guest Kendall A. Ware, EdD, the author of the book “Solving for Freedom: An Algebra I Textbook that Illuminates Black History Through Math Concepts” discussed during the last few minutes of the program how his textbooks are being used in SIUE’s Upward Bound program and his conversations with Cooper.
“The students were telling me they were excited, and it was a different way to learn math,” said Ware.
Cooper added, “It feels like they’re learning not just math, but they’re learning about their history.”
