SIUE Welcome Celebrations Highlight Student Inclusion
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub hosted its fall affinity welcome receptions for students from Monday-Thursday, Aug. 26-29.
Each semester, The Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub holds gatherings to greet students from traditionally underrepresented populations to campus. The Student Welcomes include Hispanic/Latinx, AAPI/APIDA, Rainbow and Black.
“Welcoming students to campus is an important tradition at any university,” said Stephanie Weiskopf, director of the Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub. “Affinity Welcome Celebrations are one way, among many, that we welcome students at SIUE. It is important that students find their place, develop a sense of belonging, and feel a part of the SIUE community.”
“These celebrations are a great way for students to start, or grow, their belonging journey and find that support and connection,” continued Weiskopf. “Celebrations include tables for student organizations, local organizations, and faculty and staff associations, as well as food, refreshments, music and games.”
The fall receptions were a huge success, according to Weiskopf.
“People felt seen and affirmed on this campus,” she added. “The celebrations were warm and personal. People were able to connect with others and feel part of a community. The Kimmel Belonging and Engagement Hub looks forward to hosting these events every year!”
