Regional and National News Coverage this Fall Semester Features SIUE Faculty and Chancellor James T. Minor
Chancellor James T. Minor, PhD, and several faculty members of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville have contributed to both regional and national news coverage this fall semester on multiple fronts.
Mina Sumita, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and her chemist counterpart Mohtashim Shamsi, PhD, PDF, associate professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, were featured in the St. Louis Business Journal article, “SIU chemists collaborate across campuses, win grant.” The team was one of two who received a SIU System Faculty Collaboration Award of $20,000. Their work focused on designing biomolecular probes that will detect genetic biomarkers for genetic changes and diseases.
Erik B. Alexander, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Historical Studies, was recently a guest on C-SPAN for a discussion of the Presidential Election of 1876. “It is the closest election in American history,” said Alexander, who has written and published extensively of the period. “It was decided by just one electoral vote.” Visit C-SPAN for a replay of the broadcast.
The recent Topping Out ceremony, a construction milestone, at the SIUE Health and Sciences Building was covered by KSDK news, which included an interview with Minor. “You think about where the healthcare shortages are across the state,” said Minor. “We’re very pleased to be providing much-needed healthcare professionals to rural, urban, and high-need areas.” Visit KSDK for the story “Health and Sciences Building at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville nearly halfway complete.”
A recent issue of the online finance publication WalletHub featured Paul Rose, PhD, professor of psychology and Associate Dean in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, offering tips on comparing credit cards.
“Several web sites make it easy to compare features of similar credit cards,” said Rose. “Artificial intelligence chatbots also usually do a good job of summarizing the differences between specific cards, although chatbots always need to be fact-checked.”
