Southern Illinois Builders Association and Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program Donate $18K to SIUE to Enhance Construction Education
An $18,395 gift from the Southern Illinois Builders Association (SIBA) and the Southern Illinois Construction Advancement Program (SICAP) has been donated to the Department of Construction at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s School of Engineering. This contribution is set to make a difference in the way the Department of Construction can provide education to its students.
Donna Richter, Executive Director of both SIBA and SICAP, announced this generous donation in the School of Engineering atrium. John Cabage, PhD, Chair/associate professor explained that this gift would provide an upgrade for the construction simulators and purchase five drones for the curriculum.
Cabage stated, “The updated simulators will give students simulated experience in operating construction machinery, which is crucial for understanding safety concerns and the nuances of the equipment they will need to lead and direct others to operate.”
The drones will be utilized in a new drone applications class, providing hands-on experience in aerial surveying and site inspections. Cabage added, “These drones are sophisticated enough that we can attach LIDAR or photogrammetry devices, making their classroom experience more relevant to real-world applications.”
This donation also strengthens the recently launched Surveying and Geomatics major. Cabage emphasized its importance, stating, “It puts the current technology in our students’ hands, ensuring they are well-prepared to help companies adapt to new technologies.”
This unique program, a collaborative effort between the College of Arts and Sciences/Department of Geography and the School of Engineering, is the only one of its kind within 400 miles, addressing a growing demand in the profession. With the average age of licensed professional surveyors in Illinois being 62, job opportunities for graduates in this field are tremendous. Cabage remarked, “Our professional partners are eager to mentor students, and we are excited to provide them with the human resources needed to succeed.”
SIUE looks forward to the positive impact this generous gift will have on students, enhancing their educational experience and preparing them for careers in a rapidly evolving profession. The endorsement from SIBA and SICAP exemplifies the value of strong community partnerships in advancing educational goals. Those wishing to further support the School of Engineering may donate through the SIUE Foundation.
