SIUE Screens "Aftershock" and Talks Disparities in Maternal Health in the U.S.
Through a grant from the Faculty Emeriti Association, the Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy collaborated to host a Symposium on disparities in Maternal Health. With the screening of the documentary “Aftershock” and an interdisciplinary panel discussion, participants gained valuable insights into real-world challenges and evidence-based solutions to disparities in maternal health outcomes in the United States.
"The event really challenged my prior assumptions. I feel more prepared to maintain a sense of vigilance to advocate for my Black and brown populations,” and "I think it’s important to bring in people with real-life experiences while discussing these issues," were just a few of the reactions recalled by Amy E. Reed, PhD, RN, CHSE, assistant professor and Director, Simulation Laboratory for Health Sciences.
Reed added, "The event not only enriched student learning and faculty scholarship but also fostered stronger community partnerships, promoting a collective commitment to enhancing maternal health equity and advocacy."
