SIUE Nursing Student Earns Top Honor at Illinois National Guard’s Best Warrior Competition
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville nursing student and Illinois Army National Guard combat medic Sgt. Luke Birtch has been named the Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) of the Year following the 2025 Best Warrior Competition.
Birtch outperformed a field of elite soldiers and NCOs from across the state in a grueling multi-day competition testing physical endurance, tactical proficiency, mental resilience, and leadership.
His path to victory was forged through relentless preparation. In December, he trained for the competition’s 12-mile road march and eventually completed the march in an impressive 2 hours and 40 seconds.
Balancing a demanding training regimen with his studies and two jobs, Birtch works as an emergency medical technician with Abbott EMS and as a nurse technician in the emergency department at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis. He also recently completed the Chicago Marathon and regularly competes in triathlons.
Birtch’s long-term goal is to become an Army trauma surgeon, evolving from his passion for medicine and military service.
“You don't become what you wish you're going to be,” said Birtch. “You become what you set your lowest standards to be. You'll never reach your dream self until you raise your standards to meet that level.”
“I can’t say enough how proud I am,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Kelly, State Command Sergeant Major and host of the 2025 competition. “Just the sheer skill set you brought to the table here is outstanding.”
SIUE celebrates Birtch’s achievement as a reflection of the dedication, hard work and determination that can be found within its student body. His recognition as NCO of the Year showcases the excellence of SIUE students both in the classroom and in service to the nation. Sgt. Birtch’s commitment to healthcare, military readiness, and leadership exemplifies SIUE’s mission to help develop students who lead by example and inspire others.
