Seven Cougars Earn All-OVC Baseball Honors
Seven SIUE baseball players earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors, including an OVC-best four first team selections.
Chase Bloomer, Daniel Gierer, Mack Mitchell and Ryan Niedzwiedz were named to the first team while pitchers Liam McKillop and Spencer Stearns were each named to the second team. Tim Teixeira earned selection to the All-Freshman team.
Bloomer is tied for fourth in the OVC in home runs with 14, which is a career high. He is tied for seventh with 47 RBIs while batting .297. Bloomer was an All-Freshman selection in 2023.
Gierer ended the regular season as the third leading hitter in the league with a .352 average. He stole 22 bases, which ranked fourth in the OVC. Gierer was an All-Freshman selection last season.
Mitchell is tied for the league lead in home runs with 19 and is second in the league in total runs scored (61) and slugging percentage (.665). He also is tied for fifth in the OVC with 50 runs batted in. The award is Mitchell's first All-OVC honor.
Niedzwiedz is hitting .335 overall and .363 in OVC games, which ranks seventh. His 37 hits in league play are tied for ninth and his seven home runs in OVC play are tied for sixth. He also is tied for second in RBIs in OVC games with 31. Niedzwiedz also was an All-Freshman selection last season.
McKillop leads the Cougars with a 2.70 earned run average overall. His ERA drops to 1.86 in OVC games, which is second lowest in the league. His 23 total appearances are tied for fourth, while his 15 appearances in OVC games is tied for the most in the league. It is McKillop's first All-OVC honor.
Stearns started 12 times in 14 weeks in the season. He struck out 61 hitters and ranked second in the league in strikeouts per nine innings at 9.58.
Teixeira tied for the league lead with 14 starts and was the only freshman in the league to start every weekend of the season. Teixeira led SIUE with 62 total strikeouts and ranked fourth in the OVC at 8.63 strikeouts per nine innings. He held opponents to a .263 batting average, which ranked ninth in the OVC.
The seven total All-OVC selections and the four first team selections are the most for SIUE since began playing a league schedule in 2012. The 2023 team also had seven total selections.
SIUE earned its highest seed ever for the OVC tournament, finishing with the No. 2 seed. The Cougars will open play Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
