Student Dispatch: Keshon Burgess, SIUE East St. Louis Center’s Building Futures Program Student, Considers Educational Plans
Burgess Interested in Majoring in Mechanical Engineering at SIUE
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville East St. Louis Center’s Building Futures Program student Keshon Burgess graduated from high school this month and wants to eventually attend SIUE. Burgess lives in East St. Louis and has an interest in obtaining a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from SIUE. Here, the 18-year-old shares his reflections on his time so far in the Building Futures Program.
I’ve enjoy being in the Building Futures program because it has been very supportive, not to mention the benefits and stipends I’ve received.
Time has been a challenge for me because I have wanted to attend more workshops this year. But I was able to deal with these challenges because the Building Futures team is very understanding. They are great at meeting you where you are and giving you the assistance, you need. Also, helping me reach my goals and always being there for me is my grandmother. She plays a vital role in my life.
I am very interested in automobiles and would like to further my skills and focus on mechanical engineering. Mrs. Ora Lockett (Building Futures Program Director) and I discussed attending a community college as it relates to my obtaining an Associate Applied Science degree. Then my plans are to transfer to SIUE to complete my Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. Cars are my passion.
I was happy to graduate from East St. Louis Senior High School and am looking forward to furthering my education in college and more training in the Building Futures Program. I can stay in Building Futures until I’m 21, and I expect for them to continue to help me.
I would encourage students and young people not to give up! I’m not. We can do what we set our minds to.
