What are the admission requirements for the traditional nursing program?
- Complete the SIUE General application and become accepted as a student.
- Complete the Traditional Nursing application. Applicants must complete their applications by Feburary 1st for Fall admission or by June 1st for Spring admission.
What are the prerequisite courses needed for the nursing program?
- There are six prerequisite courses that must be completed before starting any nursing courses. Each of the following courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher: ENG 101, ACS 103, CHEM 120A/124A, PSYC 111, BIOL 140.
What does “direct entry” into the nursing program mean?
- Direct entry is an awarded status that guarantees entry into the nursing program without having to go through the selection process. This status is awarded to incoming freshmen who submit their general application materials by December 1 and maintain the following criteria:
- A grade of C or higher in all prerequisite courses
- A minimum 3.0 prerequisite GPA (including prerequisite courses taken at SIUE or transfer) calculated at the end of the fall semester (freshman year) and again at the end of the spring semester (freshman year)
- For honors students, the prerequisite GPA will include HONS 120 and 121 in lieu of ENG 101, ENG 102 and ACS 103. HONS 100 (spring semester) will not be included in the prerequisite GPA, but will be included in the cumulative GPA.
- A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (including all college coursework) calculated at the end of the fall semester (freshman year) and again at the end of the spring semester (freshman year)
How do I transfer into the SON?
- The admission process is similar to general students. Any college- or university-level transcripts must be sent to the SIUE Office of Admissions at Campus Box 1047, or electronically to etranscripts@siue.edu.
What do I do if I’m an international student?
- You should contact the International Admissions office to receive specific details about coming to SIUE. The application process for the SON is similar for international students as well.
What is the average cost of the undergraduate nursing program?
- Tuition rates for SIUE students are based on multiple factors such as housing and special course fees. The average estimate for a full-time nursing student living on campus is approximately $25,000 per academic year.
How long does it take to complete the traditional nursing program?
- The traditional nursing program takes approximately three to four years to complete. The first year of our curriculum is dedicated to completion of the prerequisite courses, with the remaining years focusing on the nursing curriculum.
When is the application period for the traditional nursing program?
- Applications for the SON begin in the middle of September. The deadline for the fall semester is February 1 of the same year, and the deadline for the spring semester is June 1 of the prior year.
Can I take classes before I am officially admitted to the program?
- Yes, you can start your prerequisite courses in the event you are not accepted into the nursing program your first year. Admission into the nursing program is required before participating in any nursing courses.

- Absolutely! Prospective undergraduate students can contact one of our academic advisors to set up a time to meet and chat about our nursing programs.
