Biography
Dr. Misty L. Gonzalez is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at SIUE School of Pharmacy and a Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She partners with Washington University School of Medicine, where she participates in multidisciplinary teaching rounds.
She is a graduate of Purdue University College of Pharmacy and completed residency trainings in general practice and psychiatric pharmacy at the New York State Office of Mental Health partnered with the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.
Her clinical interests include severe mental illness with comorbid medical conditions, substance use disorders, drug-induced psychosis, and crisis management. Through the integration of didactic coursework and case-based teaching, Dr. Gonzalez cultivates critical thinking, lifelong learning, and problem-solving skills that prepare clinicians to navigate complex psychotropic-related situations. Her practice is rooted in fostering hope for recovery and reducing stigma toward individuals living with mental health challenges.
Global Partnerships
As Coordinator of Global Partnerships for the SIUE School of Pharmacy, Dr. Gonzalez leads academic international collaborations and medical mission experiences. She serves as lead preceptor for the School of Pharmacy’s Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) in Guatemala, partnering with Saint Louis University School of Medicine and local Guatemalan healthcare providers.
Teaching & Service
Dr. Gonzalez coordinates and teaches in the areas of psychiatry, neurology, addiction medicine, perspectives in mental health, and physical assessment. She serves as faculty advisor for the SIUE Student Chapter of the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists and is active on multiple school and university teams, including those focused on education, wellbeing and resilience, and strategic planning.
Clinical Practice
In her clinical role at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Dr. Gonzalez provides inpatient psychiatric clinical pharmacy services and precepts APPE students and PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents. She also contributes to harm reduction initiatives, medication safety, and clinical education.
Research & Interests
Her scholarly interests include psychopharmacology, pharmacogenomics, long-acting injectable antipsychotics, substance use disorders, and public health education for underserved populations. She has authored journal articles, book chapters, and professional newsletters, and presents at regional, national, and international meetings.
