Degrees

Policy on the Award of Posthumous Degrees, SIUE - 1D2

  1. An undergraduate degree may be awarded posthumously when the candidate has substantially completed the requirements for the degree. This determination rests with the dean or director of the degree-granting unit concerned, in consultation with the appropriate department or program. The dean or director shall forward a recommendation to the Provost who shall make a recommendation concerning the award to the Chancellor.
  2. A graduate degree may be awarded posthumously when the candidate has substantially completed the requirements for the degree. This determination rests with the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in consultation with the candidate's advisor(s) and the faculty of the degree program in which the candidate had been enrolled. The Dean of Graduate Studies and Research shall forward a recommendation to the Provost who shall make a recommendation concerning the award to the Chancellor.
  3. The award of a posthumous degree does not require Board of Trustees action.
