Graduate Policy, Course and Program Changes - 1L9
The Statutes of the Board of Trustees vest in the Graduate Faculty the responsibility for academic policy in Graduate School programming. This responsibility is delegated to members of the Graduate Faculty who are elected to the Graduate Council. The Graduate Council thus reviews all graduate program proposals emanating from the Graduate Faculty.
When favorable Council action results, the Dean of the Graduate School or designee will send the proposal, together with their recommendation and the Council recommendations, to the Provost or designee, who may then recommend the proposal to the Chancellor or designee for submission to the President or the Board of Trustees, as appropriate. Program changes require final action by the Chancellor or designee, as well as approval by the SIU President, pursuant to SIU Board of Trustees Policies, and are forwarded as information to the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). The addition and deletion of a degree program require final action by the IBHE.
A request to change the name of an existing unit that denotes a substantive change requires approval by the IBHE. A request for name change that denotes a reasonable and moderate extension requires approval by the Chancellor or designee with information forwarded to the IBHE.
Course changes include adding, dropping, and modifying courses. Program changes include but are not limited to adding and deleting a free-standing option or specialization within a degree program; adding and deleting a degree program; and changing admission, curricular, and graduation requirements. Changes are made through electronic forms. Course changes require final action by the Provost or designee.
Graduate Council policy recommendations that are not associated with Graduate Faculty program proposals or internal administration of the Graduate School will be sent to the Office of the Provost and Faculty Senate Executive Committee. It is understood that such recommendations may be referred to other Councils of the Senate, to the assembled Senate, and/or to the Chancellor. Communication of such recommendations to the Office of the Provost shall be the responsibility of the Graduate School. Communication of such recommendations to the Senate Executive Committee shall be the responsibility of the Chair of the Graduate Council.
Policy recommendations for the internal administration of the Graduate School that have no budgetary or organizational implications will be sent to the Provost or designee by the Dean of the Graduate School or designee and will become effective upon approval by the Provost or designee.
Approved by Chancellor effective 4/25/22
