SIUE Student Housing Residence Requirement - 3B2
INTRODUCTION
National studies conclude that on-campus residency has positive effects on student retention, involvement in government and social organizations, and personal development. Of all the positive factors associated with on-campus residency, three areas deserve special attention:
- Academic Persistence
On-campus residents are more likely than off-campus students to maintain excellent academic performance and earn bachelor's degrees. A recent review indicates that this is also true on the SIUE campus. The average GPA of University Housing students is higher than the average for students living off campus. Additionally, the average number of credit hours earned is higher for students living on campus than the average for students living off campus. - Satisfaction with Faculty
On-campus residents tend to have more contact with faculty and are more satisfied with their interaction with faculty than off-campus students. University Housing's structured programs for residents and faculty to connect include the Faculty Fellows program, House Calls program, and First Semester Transition (FST) classes tied to the residential experience. - Student Experience
On-campus residents are more likely to be connected to the SIUE community, and engaged in the overall student experience. Additionally, living on-campus supports residents with a 24-hour staffing model and enhanced safety and security measures. Living on-campus is part of the full collegiate experience and a valuable part of being an SIUE Cougar.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
First year students attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville are required to live in University Housing. This requirement applies to all new students in their first year following graduation from high school. This requirement is applicable to all students only insofar as space is available in University Housing.
Exceptions to this first-year residency requirement may be granted only under certain limited conditions, including the following:
- Students residing at a parent's or legal guardian's permanent address, which must be located within 60 miles of campus as measured by Google.com ("Legal Guardian" means a person appointed guardian by a court of competent jurisdiction to act on behalf of the student in place of parents. Legal documentation may be requested for verification.);
- Part-time students taking fewer than twelve hours during either Fall semester or Spring semester;
- Students enrolled in all online courses each semester;
- Students over the age of 20 on or before August 15;
- Students residing with a spouse or qualifying domestic partner under University Housing policy;
- Students residing with their legal dependents;
- Students who are veterans of the U.S. military (a DD214 must be submitted);
- Students having already completed 56 credit hours accepted by the University toward a degree at the University who have not graduated high school within the last 12 months;
- Students having lived in University Housing for two semesters; or
- Students with documented medical needs that cannot be accommodated by University Housing.
Students wishing to be released from the residency requirement must complete an exemption form provided by University Housing To request an exemption from the residency requirement, the student must submit their completed form with documented verification of any of the above criteria by July 1 preceding Fall enrollment and December 1 preceding Spring enrollment.
First year students (by high school graduation date) who do not live on campus and have not been approved for an exemption with be charged the shared bedroom residence hall rate.
