People-Focused Health and Safety Policy - 5F9
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville remains focused on preserving the health and safety of our community while serving our students with excellence. Considering a science-based approach, the following principles have informed this policy:
- Community – we want our community to thrive, our institution to remain open, and our students and employees to remain healthy.
- Continued Caution – people can spread illness before they have symptoms, and these safety precautions can help mitigate that risk.
- Kindness – members of our community may have a loved one or are themselves battling illness or caring for someone at risk. Compliance with safety measures helps protect everyone.
General
- Students and employees are expected to maintain healthy hygiene practices, including but not limited to, frequent hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes.
- Students and employees are expected to conduct a daily health self-assessment and isolate themselves if symptoms of illness are present. Symptoms may include:
- Fever (100.4 degrees or above) or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
Preventive Medical Care
- Students and employees are strongly encouraged to get all recommended preventive medical care, including vaccines, to protect themselves, their loved ones and our community from communicable illnesses. Please note that some of SIUE's academic programs and campus services have additional requirements associated with the delivery of health care services, clinical care, early childhood and K-12 education.
- In addition, SIUE's academic programs rely on a large number of community partners to place students in a diverse array of field experiences (internships, practicums, clinical rotation, student teaching, etc.) that may have distinct requirements beyond those outlined in this policy.
Face Masks
- Students and employees have the right to wear a mask without questioning, criticism, or judgement. Please note that some of SIUE's academic programs and campus services may have additional requirements associated with the delivery of health care services, clinical care, early childhood and K-12 education.
Quarantine/Isolation
- Students and employees are expected to follow the quarantine and isolation guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and or their medical provider.
- Students should follow instructions from their course instructors regarding absences.
- Employees must contact their supervisor or department chair to inform them of their absence.
- If a student or employee is required to self-quarantine or isolate and does not comply with this requirement, the student or employee will be referred to the appropriate office (Dean of Students or Human Resources) for possible disciplinary action.
University and Personal Travel
- Students and employees are expected to follow current Travel Guidelines for University-Related and Personal Travel.
This policy remains in effect until further notice, and may be amended as needed.
