Latex Policy - 6F7
Purpose
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (the "University") is committed to providing safe and healthy learning and working environments for all members of the University community. The purpose of this Latex Policy is to reduce, so far as is reasonably possible, the exposure of individuals to latex proteins on our campuses and at University sponsored events. The University will provide educational resources to promote awareness and the availability of protective measures to ensure the safety of individuals with latex allergies or sensitivities.
Scope
Latex allergies are a reaction to proteins which are in natural rubber. Allergic reactions to these proteins include but are not limited to headaches, shortness of breath, hives, and welts. Risk of such reactions are minimized when appropriate steps are taken so that impacted individuals avoid exposure to latex and latex powder residue. To this end, items and equipment utilized at the University and at University sponsored events will be latex free whenever possible.
This policy applies to University students, employees, visitors, contractors, and third-party vendors engaged in all programs and activities that occur on University property or in contexts over which the University exerts primary control.
Latex Use Prohibited
- The use or distribution of latex gloves for any purpose is prohibited.
- Latex balloons and other latex based decor are prohibited in all University spaces (indoor and outdoor) and at all University programs and events.
- Distribution of items made primarily of latex including, but not limited to, promotional items, and school supplies are prohibited unless such items are individually wrapped in a manner that prevents inadvertent release of latex powder residue or other latex contact. Individually wrapped items will be clearly marked as containing latex.
- Employees are expected to identify existing items in their areas that contain latex in a form that could cause an allergic reaction in someone who has a latex allergy or sensitivity. As existing equipment is replaced, non-latex equipment will be purchased, if available.
Students and employees with documented latex allergies are encouraged to contact the Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) Office if accommodations may be required.

Information on latex-free alternatives and additional information regarding this Policy are available to individuals and organizations who request it through the University department they are working with as well as through the Office for Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS), and on the corresponding University webpage.
