The Jump from High School to College Isn’t Always Easy. This is Why SIUE Makes It So Special.
Posted July 31, 2019
I, like many of you, was ecstatic about graduating high school. I was on top of the world for finally being in the senior class. However, I knew college was right around the corner. It was a lingering thought that made me feel very uneasy. My senior summer seemed to fly by, and I knew being a freshman all over again in a new place was approaching.
I had been accepted into Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and was so excited to receive my paperwork and start my classes. But I was anxious...I did not know where any of my classes were, if I’d make friends, or if my professors would be any good.
SIUE made the jump from high school to college much easier than I had planned.
Textbooks
At SIUE, there is a textbook rental program. Meaning...all undergraduate students may rent their textbooks and bring them back at a determined time. The price is included in the fees. Due to this program, I, like the rest of the student body, got to pick my textbooks up a week before classes started. I wasn’t worried at all about having the wrong textbooks for class, or having another expense for going back to school.
“Ask me” Volunteers
On the first day of classes, SIUE faculty and staff are located all across campus holding signs that say “Ask Me” on them. And they mean just that. These people were there to make sure I found my classes so I could avoid the “deer-in-headlights” look. This is definitely an advantage of going to SIUE. Everyone cares so much about the students.
Professors
Most professors email their students a week, or a few days, prior to the start of classes with the syllabus for the semester. I cannot stress how incredibly helpful this is! I know the materials I need before class even begins, but I also know what my professors expect of me and what the homework load looks like. The professors at SIUE go above and beyond for their students and want nothing more than to see us succeed.
The amazing student body
Here at SIUE, there are so many ways to meet people: Greek life, student government, clubs catered to various interests and our classes. Making friends or getting involved isn’t an issue.
From the moment I got out of my car in the Red Lot and made the walk over to Peck Hall, I knew SIUE was going to be my new home away from home. The surrounding foliage, wildlife scurrying constantly around me and the endless amount of friendly faces all made a lasting impact. I hope you’re stoked to start classes soon...I am!
