Industrial-Organizational Psychology
Overview
Industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology focuses on the application of psychological principles and knowledge to the workplace. I-O psychologists help organizations solve complex problems and aim to improve the workplace experience for employees. Example areas of focus include job satisfaction, motivation, leadership, employee recruitment/selection, training, performance evaluation, productivity, and organizational change initiatives.SIUE's I-O psychology master's program offers an intentional blend of the scientist-practitioner model. Students have the choice of completing an applied track (emphasis on practicum experience) or academic track (with thesis). Regardless of the chosen track, research and practical elements are embedded in the curriculum for all students. Research experiences are directed at conceptualizing and solving organizational problems. Practical experiences are oriented towards giving students applied skills and realistic expectations to enable effective performance in an organizational context.
SIUE’s close proximity to downtown St. Louis offers the opportunity for professional endeavors, networking, as well as first-class culture, arts, and sports, all of which is balanced by a quiet community environment conducive to study.
Program Format
The program requires 36 credit hours of coursework and is designed to be completed in two years. Coursework is typically offered as traditional in-person classes that occur during daytime hours.
