National Disability Awareness Month
Each year, ACCESS and SIUE observe National Disability Awareness Month which takes place each October. Disability Awareness Month operates with the expressed purpose of educating the public about everything from universal design in education to social justice, and employment issues impacting persons with disabilities. It also serves as a celebration of the many and varied contributions of individuals with disabilities throughout history. Join us this October as we promote the independence, integration and inclusion of all people with disabilities.
ED Roberts Champions of Accessibility Celebration
Each October ACCESS hosts its Annual, Ed Roberts “Champions of Accessibility” Celebration honors the life and legacy of pioneering American disability rights activist, Edward Verne Roberts, seen by many as the father of the independent living movement. This event also serves as an opportunity to recognize “Champions of Accessibility” on SIUE’s campus. Each year we honor a Faculty and Staff “Defender of Equity” as well as a student “Messenger of Inclusion”. This event also affords an opportunity for the campus community and administrators to hear directly from ACCESS Students during a “State of Accessibility Address” provided during the event.
