Research Interests: My research interests include two areas of focus, native plant conservation through tissue culture and science education. Tissue culture is a useful tool for generating larger numbers of plants which are rare or difficult to propagate through traditional means. My tissue culture research is currently focused on plants native to Illinois and we are working primarily on woodland ephemerals and rare prairie plants. Many of these plants grow very slowly and are sensitive to habitat disturbances. Propagation through tissue culture can provide large numbers of plants for habitat restoration and may reduce the amount of plant collection from natural areas. My science education research focuses on evaluating and improving biology education at the secondary and post-secondary levels. We have focused on the effectiveness of common learning strategies and ways to improve the lab experience for both teachers and students.
