What do English majors study?
The English major studies the broad subject of language through courses in literature, linguistics, creative writing, and rhetoric/writing. Majors develop advanced skills in writing, reading, interpreting, and understanding the cultural significance of a wide variety of texts.
What can you do with an English degree?
Because of their ability to read carefully, write effectively, think creatively, analyze deeply, and communicate clearly, graduates with a BA in English are well-poised for hundreds of possible careers in the public and private sectors. Some graduates go on to work in marketing, public relations, publishing, non-profit fundraising, and technical writing. Others pursue advanced degrees in fields such as Law and Library Science.

How many years does it take to major in English?
Our curriculum is designed to be completed in four years.
Can you teach with an English degree?
Yes. The Department offers the option to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English plus Illinois Professional Educator Licensure in secondary English Language Arts.
Are English majors in demand?
A report by Georgetown University indicates that the four most in-demand competencies in the labor market by 2020 will be “judgment/decision-making, communications, analysis, and administration,” competencies that students hone as English majors.
