Gordon D. Bush Political Science Scholarship Endowment
This award celebrates Dr. Gordon Bush’s life-long interest in the political process as well as more than 40 years as a public servant, with 32 of those years as an elected official, and to recognize outstanding achievement by an SIUE student majoring in political science. The recipient of this scholarship is selected by a committee established by the Department of Political Science.
Lloyd “Curly” Harris served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1937-1969. In his honor, the Curly Harris Award is given annually to the major in political science that has achieved the highest GPA for their coursework.
Evelyn Bowles Public Service Scholarship
This award honors Evelyn Bowles’ lifetime commitment to public service and education, as well as her desire to inspire those underrepresented in the ranks of elected officials to participate in government and in the electoral process, and to seek public office. Evelyn Bowles served in the United States Coast Guard Women’s Reserve Intelligence Division during World War II. She served eight consecutive terms as the Madison County Clerk before moving to the Illinois State Senate. Senator Bowles was appointed to the Illinois State Senate in 1994 and served in this capacity for 8 and ½ years. She served as the Democratic Spokesperson of the Senate, as well as numerous other committees, including the Environment and Energy Committee, the Local Government and Elections Committee, the Licensed Activities Committee, the State Government Operations Committee, and the Agriculture and Conservation Committee. Senator Bowles amassed numerous accomplishments during her political career.
Jeremiah Houk Strive for Excellence Award
Jeremiah Houk was a senior in the Department of Political Science when he tragically lost his life. Jeremiah will be remembered for his motivation and determination to succeed and his willingness to explore non-traditional issues in political science.
Political Science Association Award for Community Service
This award is given to highlight the spirit of the Political Science Association and their commitment to community service, civic engagement and non-partisanship.
Pi Sigma Alpha Award for Excellence
This award is presented to a member of Pi Sigma Alpha who best exemplifies excellence in both academic and personal pursuits.
Study of Diversity in Politics Award
This award is presented to the student with the highest GPA and record of specialty in the politics of diversity.
Tim Kalinowski Senior Assignment Excellence Award
This award is presented each semester to the student who produces the highest quality Senior Assignment.
Hipskind and McAninch Scholarship for Legal Studies
This award is presented each year to a political science student who graduated from a high school in Belleville, Illinois that has a GPA of at least 3.0.
