Diversity Initiatives in the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior
The School of Education, Health and Human Behavior is committed to an inclusive and equitable environment. The SEHHB's Diversity Committee pursues a variety of projects each year to ensure that our school is welcoming to underrepresented students, faculty and staff. Historically, members of the Diversity Committee have provided training related to LGBTQIA students' needs, assisted with efforts to mentor international students and students of color within our school, and advised faculty.
To support high-needs local youth, the SEHHB also promotes SIUE student participation in the Madison County Regional Office of Education's Give 30 Mentoring Program and the East St. Louis NAACP's ACT-SO Mentoring Program. In addition, all faculty search committees within the school include a diversity advocate, and all search committees use procedures designed to enhance the number and diversity of applications received for faculty positions.
Another SEHHB team, the DREAM Collective, is committed to serving the region in the process of naming, addressing and dismantling racism through education, advocacy and mobilization. As scholar - activists, members of the DREAM Collective believe that the work of dismantling racism requires constant inward reflection and outward engagement with systemic injustices. Building on decades of scholarship, the DREAM Collective seeks to examine institutional structures and challenge and redefine lasting actions that dehumanize people who identify as Black or Indigenous, or as people of color (BIPOC).
