Cultural Diversity in Public Health
In the U.S., students interact with public health and the public health system everyday, often without recognition of the fact. Traditional public health courses offer students an overview of the public health system in the U.S. Our travel study courses offer students the opportunity to experience public health and the public health system in a culturally diverse country.
Our travel study courses examine various aspects of public health, the public system, life, culture, and the geopolitical climate in other countries or culturally diverse areas. Potential areas of examination and service could include environmental sustainability, environmental education and programming, disaster response and relief, community development, and health and wellness education. These courses may also examine social justice, leadership and the healthcare system. Opportunities are provided to develop and use foundational language skills. These experiences will examine life in another country through service, cultural immersion and learning.
Upon completion of any travel study course, students will be able to:
- Identify the role of community organizations in providing health promotion, disease intervention and health protection to improve the health of residents
- Analyze the similarities and differences in the public health services provided and the needs of vulnerable populations in another country and the U.S.
- Explain how cultural, social, political and economic issues impact public health of people in the travel study country
