Eta Sigma Gamma
History
Eta Sigma Gamma is the national health education honorary society which was founded in 1967 by Warren E. Schaller HSD, William Bock BHD, and Robert J. Synovitz HSD. Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG) first started at Ball State University but now consists of over 80 chapters at different college and universities throughout the United States and Canada.
Goals
The goals of Eta Sigma Gamma include supporting the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs and resources, stimulating and disseminating scientific research, recognizing academic achievement, supporting health education advocacy initiatives, and promoting professional standards and ethics.
Membership
ESG can be joined by students that are Health Education Majors or Minors. Students who wish to join SIUE's Gamma Delta chapter of ESG must pay an initiation fee of $50.00, have a minimum GPA of 2.7, attend chapter meetings and participate in at least 10 service hours each semester. Service hours can be obtained by participating in or helping prepare for Eta Sigma Gamma sponsored events. Some past successful events have been World AIDS Day, SIUE Health Brigade Day, a Thanksgiving canned food drive, the Madison County Youth Forum, a condom distribution event at local Edwardsville bars and participation in a variety of wellness fairs both on and off campus. Additionally, members of Eta Sigma Gama must participate in all chapter fundraisers. Members are eligible if they meet the Eta Sigma Gamma requirements to wear honor cords at graduation.
