Digital Content Caption Editing
Creating short, high interest videos serves to provide direct instruction, foster learning communities, and to produce content that can be viewed multiple times to increase understanding and retention of information. Using accessible, short videos is a best practice for online learning.
While captioning videos is an absolute necessity for accessibility purposes, it also supports multi-modal learning for improved retention of information and allows your students to view video material without sound if they are watching in an environment where the audio could create distractions for others.
The University-supported YuJa software can automatically generate captions with a 90%+ accuracy rate; however, previewing and editing the captions can be time consuming. Through the digital content caption editing service, trained student workers can preview, edit, and create a full transcript of faculty-created video content.
Prepare to request captioning:
- Your video must be placed in Yuja. Caption editing is not provided for videos stored outside of YuJa.
- The faculty member who created the video must be the person filling out this form.
- Faculty should make final edits, such as trimming the beginning and end, prior to submitting the video.
- A video can be shared with students and/or posted in Blackboard prior to caption editing. Once caption editing is complete, the updated captions (CC) will automatically become available on the video. Faculty are encouraged to make their videos available prior to completing the captioning request form. Information on linking videos in Blackboard is available at: https://kb.siue.edu/117498 and https://kb.siue.edu/117864
What Faculty Can Expect When Requesting Captioning
- Your request form is returned to Online Services and Educational Outreach, and you will be notified when caption editing has begun on your video(s).
- The student worker makes edits, asks for clarification of words that are undecipherable, and notifies you when caption editing is complete. Note that the typical turnaround time is 3-5 business days but can be longer depending on the volume of videos and time needed.
- You will be prompted to confirm your satisfaction with the caption editing and provide feedback to Online Services and Educational Outreach.
