Research Doctoral Student Supplemental Funding
The purpose of this supplemental funding is to enable the extension of an externally sponsored project beyond the funded scope of work through funding a research assistantship (RA) for a research doctoral student.
Award Requirements
- To apply for funding for a supplemental research doctoral assistantship, the following requirements must be met.
- There is an awarded externally sponsored project other than an internship agreement.
- The supervisor is PI or co-PI on the above award. (Key personnel may be considered; justification will have to be provided.)
- The above award funds one or more doctoral student RAs for no less than half the project period.
- This supplemental award can fund one additional doctoral student RA up to the appointment level/stipend of the doctoral-level RA funded on the external award.
- The supplement can begin no earlier than the start date of the external award.
- The funded RA must meet contract length requirements in Policy 4A3 to receive a tuition waiver.
- The funds must be expended by the expiration date of the original grant OR 12 months, whichever comes first.
- A maximum of $123,000 in support is available for this program per fiscal year. Therefore, approval of an application is contingent on the availability of funds.
- There are no deferrals and no extensions on the funding.
The supervisor is responsible for ensuring completion of the RA contract process.
Application Process
- After being awarded an external grant, the proposed supervisor faculty completes the online application in Kuali Build at least 6 weeks prior to proposed RA start date. The application includes a description of how an additional RA will extend the funded project. Note that the scope of work is to be different and needs to match the requested effort.
Student Eligibility
- Open to doctoral students completing a dissertation or doctoral project in the co-op PhD or EdD programs.
- Student must remain in good academic standing and adhere to all policies and procedures applicable to graduate assistants throughout the duration of the supplemental award.
