Discipline(s): All
In the video link below Carrie Butts-Wilmsmeyer, Ph.D., Associate Professor in Biological Sciences and the Director of the Center for Predictive Analytics (C-PAN), shares her experiences working with SIUE’s Office of Research and Projects. Over the last 6 years, Dr. Butts-Wilmsmeyer has secured more than $3.2M in funding as a Principal Investigator (PI) and $12.4M providing support for others’ research.
Dr. Carrie Butts-Wilmsmeyer received her Ph.D. in Crop Science with a focus in Quantitative Genetics and Plant Breeding from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Continuing a journey that began during her Ph.D., Carrie enjoys working at the intersection of quantitative and life sciences. This journey took her to SIUE, where she explores the applications of data science and its tools to real-world needs.
Dr. Butts-Wilmsmeyer has worked on projects not only in her primary discipline of quantitative genetics, but in all aspects of data science. She has led projects and collaborated with other researchers in areas such as human health, workforce development and training, student retention and success, economic and community impact, haptic design, robotics, and computational infrastructure. Just as DNA is a shared programming language between all organisms, Dr. Butts-Wilmsmeyer loves working in the data science space because, as she puts it, data is a universal language that allows us to discover the world around us. Current projects that Dr. Butts-Wilmsmeyer is working on as the PI are MEG Models (USDA), Sustaining Illinois through Safe Drinking Water for All (IIN), Crossing the Digital Divide (USDA), Experiential Learning In Applied Statistics and Data Science (USDA), Opioid Patient Risk Index (IDPH). In Fall 2022, Dr. Butts-Wilmsmeyer was awarded SIUE’s Vaughn Vandegrift URCA (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities) Research Mentor of the Semester Award.
