The Graduate Faculty
Graduate Faculty may teach courses available for graduate credit, serve on graduate committees, direct masters theses, chair masters committees, chair doctoral committees, and direct doctoral dissertations. Graduate faculty status may be granted on a permanent basis for tenure-track or tenured faculty. The criteria used to grant graduate permanent faculty status is outlined in the Graduate Faculty policy.
Graduate faculty status may be granted on a temporary basis for non-tenure track faculty and non-continuous appointments. Temporary graduate faculty status is granted for a maximum period of three years and the approval is course-specific based on the courses approved when the application is submitted. The criteria used to grant temporary graduate faculty status is covered by Policy 1C10.
Note that graduate faculty status can only be granted to internal SIUE faculty. If a graduate student desires an external thesis/dissertation committee member, their committee must still be comprised of three SIUE graduate faculty per Policy 1L8. An external member may serve as a fourth committee member, and graduate faculty status is not allowed or required for the in that circumstance.
Submit an Application for Graduate Faculty Status
In order to apply for permanent or temporary graduate faculty status, the graduate faculty application must be submitted. The application may be submitted by the applicant or the department on the applicant's behalf. Accessing the application requires active SIUE credentials, thus if the application is for a faculty member not on an active contract, the application must be submitted by the department on the applicant's behalf.
