Study Skills

AD 115 Study Skills – (2 credits)

Course Description

This course is designed to enhance student success by improving study behaviors and attitudes through academic goal setting, study systems, note-taking techniques, test taking strategies, time management, classroom communication, and problem solving. Students will identify their preferred learning styles and tailor their approaches to learning accordingly. They will learn to improve listening skills, to increase concentration, and to process information more efficiently. Other topics include test anxiety strategies, stress reduction, memory techniques, procrastination management, and approaches for proficient textbook reading. This course carries two hours of elective credit toward graduation.

Evaluation of Student Progress

Evaluation of course work will be based on classroom assignments, quizzes, tests, class participation, homework assignments (including reflective journal and study skills notebook), group activities, presentations, and attendance. Final grades will be determined by the following percentages: 90-100 %=A, 80-89%=B, 70-79%=C, 60-69%=D, below 60%=F.

Required Materials

  • Textbook (available through Textbook Service): Essential Study Skills 6e by Linda Wong, Houghton-Mifflin, 2009
  • 3-ring binder with dividers
  • Daily planner

Attendance

Learning takes place in the classroom through the introduction, demonstration and practice of study skills strategies and activities. Attendance is required to achieve the maximum benefit from this class and is expected each time the class meets. Failure to attend class regularly may result in administrative withdrawal from the course; therefore, it is extremely important to stay in contact with the instructor if an emergency would cause an absence from class. The student is responsible for knowing what happens in class and for handing in assignments on time, even if there is a legitimate reason for the absence.

Academic Support

Please keep in mind that the instructor is here to be of assistance. Feel free to stop by during the posted office hours or make an appointment if the times are not convenient.

ACCESS

Students needing accommodations because of medical diagnosis or major life impairment will need to register with Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) and complete an intake process before accommodations will be given.  The ACCESS office is located in the Student Success Center, Room 1270.  You can also reach the office by e-mail at myaccess@siue.edu or by calling 618-650-3726.  For more information on policies, procedures, or necessary forms, please visit the ACCESS website at www.siue.edu/access.

Academic Integrity

SIUE will not tolerate inappropriate behavior, cheating, or plagiarism (using the writing or ideas of another as one’s own or failing to give credit to the rightful author). Failure to follow these rules may result in a zero on a paper, a failing grade for a course, or even expulsion from the university. Refer to the Booklet “Student Conduct and Student Grievances: Rights and Responsibilities” for clarification if there are questions about this policy.
