Reading

AD 116 Reading Speed & Efficiency – (2 credits)

Course Description

Reading Speed and Efficiency focuses on improvement of reading rate and flexibility. The course also emphasizes comprehension, vocabulary development, and textbook reading strategies as related to reading efficiency and overall academic performance. This course carries two hours of elective credit toward graduation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will use a variety of strategies for improving reading rate and proficiency.
  • Students will self-assess reading skills and reading rate; they will continuously evaluate progress in accelerating reading rate and improving comprehension.
  • Students will attain strategies for expanding vocabulary.
  • Students will acquire flexible reading approaches.
  • Students will increase reading rate by at least 100 WPM, while scoring 80% or better on comprehension, by the end of the semester.
  • Students will demonstrate a college level of reading on standardized testing (SDRT).

Evaluation of Student Progress

Evaluation of course work will be based on classroom assignments, quizzes, tests, class participation, self-assessment, and homework assignments. Final grades will be determined by the following percentages: 90-100%=A, 80-89%=B, 70-79%=C, 60-69%=D, below 60%=F.

Required Materials

The following textbook for AD 116 is available through Textbook Services:
Reading Power 6e, by James I. Brown and Vivian V. Fishco, Houghton Mifflin Company, 2002.

Attendance

Very specific reading strategies, which require much practice, are introduced and demonstrated in this course. Attendance is required to achieve the maximum benefit from this class and is expected each time the class meets. Failure to attend class regularly may result in administrative withdrawal from the course; therefore, it is extremely important to stay in contact with the instructor if an emergency would cause an absence from class. The student is responsible for knowing what happens in class and for submitting assignments on time, even if there is a legitimate reason for the absence.

Assignments must be turned in at the beginning of the class on the day they are due.

Academic Support

Please keep in mind that your instructor is here to help you. Feel free to stop by during the posted office hours or make an appointment if the times are not convenient for you.

ACCESS

Students needing accommodations because of medical diagnosis or major life impairment will need to register with Accessible Campus Community & Equitable Student Support (ACCESS) and complete an intake process before accommodations will be given.  The ACCESS office is located in the Student Success Center, Room 1270.  You can also reach the office by e-mail at myaccess@siue.edu or by calling 618-650-3726.  For more information on policies, procedures, or necessary forms, please visit the ACCESS website at www.siue.edu/access.

Academic Integrity

SIUE will not tolerate inappropriate behavior, cheating, or plagiarism (using the writing or ideas of another as one’s own or failing to give credit to the rightful author). Failure to follow these rules may result in a zero on a paper, a failing grade for a course, or even expulsion from the university. Refer to the Booklet “Student Conduct and Student Grievances: Rights and Responsibilities” for clarification if there are questions about this.
