About Us
The School of Nursing Simulated Learning Center for Health Sciences (SLCHS) supports critical thinking skills, increasing student application of nursing knowledge and skill development in an interactive healthcare environment. Seven computerized patients display physiological changes that simulate human patient response to a variety of nursing interventions. These simulated patients allow our students to learn and practice in a laboratory setting that is as close to real life as possible.
Innovative Teaching Methods
Our nursing program strives to equip the next wave of nursing professionals with the skills they need to tackle any challenge. To prepare them for anything, the SLCHS and our lab team focus on creating an environment that mirrors the real world. There are multiple simulation modalities that we employ to train our nurses, including human computer simulators, task trainers and standardized patient actors. Using case studies and Socratic questioning, we work with students to develop clinical-level judgment and problem solving skills. Through monitored simulations and training, we ensure that our students make the transfer from lab time to real-world clinical practice as seamless as possible.
Realism and Technology
There is no better way to prepare our students for their clinical sites than by creating an environment that mimics the real world. Our technical team and lab staff come together to build situations that prepare students for practice with electronic health records, medication administration technology, IV infusion, and much more. Our lab even houses a simulated operating room with authentic equipment and anesthesia supplies, allowing graduate students to prepare for even the most stressful healthcare environments.
Collaboration and Teamwork
Working together is a core value of the School of Nursing, and the SLCHS challenges students to collaborate in order to overcome any challenge we give to them. Our faculty instructors work to instill positive growth among team members by regularly debriefing after every simulation to ensure that each team works as a unit. Beyond our regular cohorts, the SLCHS also allows students from other healthcare fields, including pharmacy and social work, to come together and learn the value of great teamwork.
