Manage Your Time
Managing your time is important. In an online course, it is even more critical. Make sure you are prioritizing, planning and using a calendar. Use your syllabus to note important due dates, quizzes or exams.
Try Not to Procrastinate
Flexibility is an important component of online learning, but you can avoid added stress by getting a jump-start on assignments when possible.
Set a Routine
Plan your day so you know what to expect. Whether you are in synchronous or asynchronous courses, you may benefit from a structure that is comfortable to you and your learning style.
Designate a Study Space
Learning can take place in any setting where a computer and internet are available. To alleviate stress, designate a space where you can study and participate in class as necessary. Make sure you can store your materials, easily access your computer or virtual textbooks, and participate in coursework.
Reduce Distractions
We know it may not be possible to eliminate distractions, but do your best to find a space that allows you to focus.

Know Your Resources
A comprehensive, fully online orientation is available for SIUE students. The orientation covers topics ranging from registering for classes and available tutoring to using Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Please refer to the orientation for support and contacts.
Speak Up!
Make sure to inform your instructor of any changes in your schedule, absences or other things that may impact your course success. Ask questions if you do not understand the course content.
Get Social
Discussion Boards
Discussion boards can be a great resource to better understand course content. Participating may feel like a formality, but consider the opportunity to learn other perspectives from your peers.
You Are Not Alone. Get Creative!
Even virtually, there are opportunities to collaborate with your classmates. Consider getting together virtually to share ideas or resources. Or if possible, set up a meeting at a park or on campus. You could even invite your instructor for additional support.
Stay Positive
Be Accountable
Success in your coursework depends on several components, but primarily you. Set goals, both small and large that will help you feel accomplished in your studies.
Stay Motivated
Think about why you started and the long-term value of completing your degree. Even if you have gotten off track, it is not too late to be successful.
Take Care of You
Practice your version of self-care. Get fresh air. Take time to rest. Take care of your mental health.

Video Meeting Platforms
If you have never used Zoom, it may be challenging to navigate. Here are additional resources.
Relying on Technology to be Successful
Email, Teams, Starfish, Blackboard and other tools are designed to support you. Take full advantage of their capabilities. If you are unsure how to use any SIUE platform, refer to the orientation.
Less In-person Engagement with Your Peers
You might not be physically sharing space with your peers, but learning is still taking place in a supportive and collaborative community.
Virtual Course Content
Lectures or other course materials are available to you at the discretion of your instructor. You should still take notes to help process and retain information.
