When to Apply for an OPT STEM Extension
You can apply for the STEM OPT extension up to 90 days before your current Post-Completion OPT expires. The application deadline is the current end date of your post-completion OPT. Please note that all application materials must be received by USCIS by your current OPT end date. No late applications will be accepted.
If you file your STEM OPT extension application on time and your OPT period expires while your extension application is pending, USCIS will automatically extend your employment authorization for 180 days. This automatic 180-day extension ceases once USCIS adjudicates your STEM OPT extension application.
