Message from the Dean
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) School of Pharmacy is a leading institution of pharmaceutical education, research, and service in the region. Our students, faculty and staff have distinguished themselves at the local, state and national levels and our alumni practice and contribute to their communities across the country.
Pharmacists in the patient care setting have a significant responsibility for ensuring that their practice incorporates the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process (PCPP). As such, a pharmacist must be competent in preparing, dispensing and managing drug therapies, providing counseling on medication use, monitoring drug therapy outcomes, and working as a member of the healthcare team. The SIUE Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program prepares practice-ready graduates who are equipped with these competencies and primed to serve as leaders in the profession.
Our fully accredited, four-year Pharm.D. program employs integrated coursework, progressive skills laboratories, professional development, co-curricular and interprofessional activities, and experiential learning in a blended fashion across the curriculum, and culminates with each student completing a capstone project. The educational opportunity includes a generous offering of international study programs as well as electives to round out the experience. As options, the degree may also be augmented with an “education” or “pediatrics” specialization or expanded through the concurrent Pharm.D./MBA program which is offered in collaboration with the accredited SIUE School of Business. We have also recently added a concurrent Pharm.D./Master of Science in Healthcare Informatics (MHI) degree that brings together computer technology and clinical expertise to effectively organize, analyze, manage and use clinical knowledge and data for problem solving and decision-making.
In addition to the professional degree, the SIUE School of Pharmacy also offers a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences for those who want a career that engages in the drug discovery and development process directly. This master’s program, which has areas of concentration in pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and medicinal chemistry, prepares students for research and science-based positions while also serving as an excellent platform for those who desire future doctoral degrees in the health sciences. Importantly, the program provides opportunities for students to work in state-of-the art laboratories alongside faculty members who have received extramural funding from prestigious sources such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
I invite you to explore one of the safest university campuses in the United States and see SIUE’s beautiful 2,660-acres. Please feel free to contact us at 618-650‑5150 or at pharmacy@siue.edu if you would like more information or want to arrange a visit.
