What are the eligibility requirements for study abroad at SIUE?
- Be an enrolled, degree-seeking student at SIUE at time of application.
- Be a full-time student at SIUE and have completed 2 semesters study (24 total credit hours) at SIUE by the intended departure date. Transfer students with at least 30 hours of credit may be eligible after completing 1 full semester at SIUE.
- Must be in good academic standing with an SIUE cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. Some programs require a higher GPA.
Are these programs for credit?
Yes! All courses are pre-approved for SIUE credit as part of the application process. This means there is no transfer process to complete: courses successfully completed are automatically awarded SIUE credit. The Study Abroad office also supports some non-credit programs at SIUE.
Do I need to speak a foreign language?
No. Almost all the destinations offered through SIUE have classes taught in English. Students are frequently studying with other American or English-speaking students.
Will Study Abroad delay my graduation?
Almost never. Even students with intense academic programs (e.g. Engineering) can study overseas on summer or break programs. Many students find they can take a full semester or year abroad, taking courses needed for graduation.
What is the best time to study abroad?
Earlier is better! Sophomore year allows the best choice of locations. Some students will study abroad in summer: it is best to do this in the summer before or after your sophomore year.
