City of Highland, 2017-2018
Located approximately 20 miles from the SIUE campus, the City of Highland is home to approximately 10,000 residents. One of the oldest Swiss settlements in the United States, Highland has a long history of being a progressive community. When Highland city leaders witnessed an increase in opioid use and abuse among their residents, they decided to get in front of the problem by addressing the stigma of being addicted and of having an addicted family member, raising awareness among residents of the extent of the problem and warning signs of abuse, and implementing a middle and high school prevention curriculum. Students enrolled in Professor Charlotte’s NURS 475 course worked with Highland City leaders to develop an awareness and educational campaign, that included a resource directory and a curriculum.
