Frequently Asked Questions
What is Suzuki pedagogy?
Suzuki pedagogy is the the study of the Suzuki method of teaching. The Suzuki method involves learning through listening, parental involvement, and starting learning at a young age, all in the manner that children learn to speak their native language.
Who invented the Suzuki method?
The Suzuki method was invented by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki following his simple observation that all Japanese children speak Japanese. He reasoned that any skill could be taught in a similar manner to language learning and patterned his method of music instruction on that idea.
How do I get Suzuki certified?
While Suzuki “certification” does not actually exist, teachers may register Suzuki training they have received with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. At SIUE, violin students may take the Suzuki Pedagogy course to receive Suzuki training and then register that training. Graduate students may earn a Master of Music with emphasis in Suzuki pedagogy.
How can the community get involved?
We offer lessons in violin, viola, and cello as well as Suzuki early childhood education to families in our community. Our program serves around 200 students in the area and has been in the Edwardsville and St. Louis community for over 50 years.
Can adults use the Suzuki method?
Anyone can learn using the Suzuki method. We are happy to welcome adult students into our program at SIUE.
