Black Faculty and Staff Association Scholarship

The Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) would like to offer (2) student scholarships for the Spring semester in the amount of $750 each to current students who embody the mission and vision of the BFSA. One scholarship will be awarded to a first-year student, currently enrolled at SIUE student; and a second scholarship will be awarded to a returning or graduate student. BFSA is excited to provide monetary support to selected students.
To be eligible for consideration for the BFSA Scholarship Award, the applicant must meet the following criteria and requirements:
- Students must meet admissions criteria for SIUE and be enrolled for full-time undergraduate or graduate study for the Spring term.
- Undergraduate applicants with fewer than twelve college semester hours earned must have a cumulative SIUE GPA of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0.
- Graduate applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Application Questions: (For essay questions 1 & 2, 250-300 Word Count. Responses constructed using artificial intelligence or AI (i.e. ChatGPT, etc.) submissions will be automatically excluded from the selection process):
- Write an essay discussing how this scholarship will address your financial need and assist you in fulfilling your future aspirations.
- How have you or how do you plan to make an impact on the black community at SIUE?
- Are you enrolled for the Fall semester?
- Please list all co-curricular activities. Indicate any offices held.
- Please list honors and/or awards you have received.
- Please list your work history (paid or unpaid) including the number of hours and dates worked.
- Please list your volunteerism history including community and/or family involvement.
The scholarship awards will be applied to the student’s University account for the semester and is considered by the Office of Student Financial Aid in evaluating the overall financial aid package. Should the amount combined with other awards or payments result in a credit balance on the account, a refund check will be applied by the Bursar’s Office.
Applications will be evaluated by the BFSA Scholarship Committee based on an essay written by the applicant, co-curricular activities (e.g. clubs, sports, etc.), honors and awards, financial need, work history, and volunteerism.
