Principal Preparation
Overview
For individuals with an Illinois Professional Educator License or a Missouri Initial Administration Certification, SIUE offers three pathways that lead to the Principal Endorsement:
- Master of Science in Education (MSEd) - Principal Preparation
- Education Specialist (EdS) - Principal Preparation*
- Post-Master’s Certificate – Principal Preparation*
* For students who already have a master’s degree
This two-year program can be completed in its entirety by taking courses one evening per week or one Saturday a month, with the exception of the summer term. Students choosing to take classes on Saturday will be required to come to campus four times per semester.
What can I do with a principal endorsement?
Completion of the principal endorsement program (endorsement, master’s or specialist) ordinarily satisfies Illinois requirements for the associated endorsement. The principal endorsement prepares professionals for careers as:
- Elementary, middle, or high school principals and assistant principals
- Athletic directors
- Dean of students
- Instructional coordinators
- Grade-level coordinators
Courses are generally acceptable for certification in other states. The principal endorsement is also one of the pathways to earning a superintendent endorsement in the state of Illinois.
