Meet the Vice Chancellor
Dr. Bill Retzlaff was named the Interim Vice Chancellor for Administration on October 17, 2022. Dr. Bill is a Distinguished Research Professor in Biological Sciences and Environmental Sciences at SIUE. Since 1999, Dr. Bill has worked with his students, colleagues, and collaborators to evaluate green roof and green wall systems and determine practical green infrastructure solutions for emerging environmental issues in urban environments. Dr. Bill is a co-founder and co-director (with Dr. Susan Morgan and Dr. Serdar Celik) of SIUE’s Living Architecture Regional Center of Excellence (https://www.siue.edu/green/) one of three regional centers in North America.
Prior to being named Interim Vice Chancellor for Administration, Dr. Bill served for four years as the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences and served for 12 years as an Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). While Department Chair of Biological Sciences, Dr. Bill worked with his colleagues on a space planning document that was instrumental in the construction of Science West. As a CAS Associate Dean, Dr. Bill participated in the construction of Art and Design West, renovation of Art and Design East, construction of Science West, and renovation of Science East along with numerous other space/facility renovations. Dr. Bill looks forward to working on the SIUE Health Sciences building project newly funded by the Illinois Capital Development Board. The project has just begun and the building is projected to open in summer 2025 and will house the School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Bill earned a bachelor of science in forest management and a master of science in forestry at Auburn University and a PhD in forestry with a minor in plant physiology from Clemson University. Dr. Bill has worked at Clemson University, UC Davis, and the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research on the Cornell Campus before accepting a faculty position at SIUE.
